Sweet surprise: Persimmon Jam.

As I walked in to my apartment after work, I noticed a box on the floor under the mailboxes. To my surprise, it was addressed to me! (it's always nice to receive mail that isn't a bill. ) The sender is an   old friend of mine, Rasheed.

Rasheed is currently attending UC Davis. Farming for sustenance and farming for fun are in this man's blood. Which leads me to the persimmon jam.

I wasn't aware that persimmons were grown in California. Nor was I aware that the growing season for persimmons just ended. Well, Rasheed being the horticulturalist/ foodie that he is, made me aware. He went crazy and harvested tons of persimmons. Some were given to a local food bank. Others, he brought home to his kitchen and made jam for friends and family. My jar arrived today. A sweet surprise indeed.

I opened the jar of jam and took a whiff. I immediately thought to myself "This smells like pumpkin pie!" I couldn't get over the wonderful aroma.

It's difficult to explain what the persimmon jam tastes like. It's divine! I sampled  the jam on plain saltines so it wouldn't compete with any other flavors. Persimmon has a cinnamon kick to it, yet the sweetness of an apricot. I guess the best description would be, perfectly sweet, deliciousness!!!

I can't wait to see what culinary creations I can  attempt that include this yummy persimmon jam ;-)

Thanks Rasheed!!!

That's my 2 cents!

  1. Hello Kimba.
Thanks for your comment on my blog.
Hope you arrived well into the new year.
Lovely jam you've got - and nice with a little "attention".
We have not received any snow - we have "green winter" with + degrees.
    Wishing you a good weekend.
    Hugs Hanne Bente ♥
